The Desire for Catechesis

Catechism has already begun. According to the inhabitants of the village we are in, they have been waiting for years to be catechized. We felt obliged to fulfil the requests of these people by instilling in them a few seeds of faith from those that the most merciful God has instilled in us: being, from our infancy, children of the Orthodox Church. We enjoy this ‘good’ - the supremacy of faith - that every human seeks as a valuable spiritual inheritance from our ancestors. This sacred inheritance, by the favour and grace of God, also involves our mortal parents and the wider social environment in which we have been raised. The people standing before us now are people of another world, who did not have the opportunity to be born and nurtured with the life giving force of our Church, as we have. Sitting on the ground, with their eyes wide open, they hang on every word we say. For years, they have been begging us and waiting for us to come to them.

When the catechism is over, the peace of God prevails in our hearts. Under a tree, as a sign of the love and gratitude of these people, we are offered a plate of rice with a small portion of lentils. A villager from a neighbouring village approaches me and sits on the ground with me. After looking at me for a while - the miracle starts. 'Father, we also want to be catechised.' Then, another villager approaches and says, "Father, my woman and I have been together for years, but we haven’t been able to have a child. Can you read a pray for us? "
